REGENERATION PROJECT TO CREATE NORTH-EAST CONSTRUCTION JOBS

Construction jobs will be created in the north-east energy industry thanks to a major regeneration project on the north bank of the Tyne.

The North Bank of the Tyne Strategic Framework Plan concerns a 600-hectare area of land stretching from Walker in Newcastle to North Shields' Bull Ring Dock.

Proposals include improvements of transportation and infrastructure, including designs for a transport interchange.

Director of capital development at regional development agency One North East David Cramond said the project represents a "unique regeneration opportunity".

"This area is already benefiting from the marine, sub-sea and renewable energy sectors, in which One North East has placed significant investment," he commented.

Mr Cramond went on to say that a low-carbon economy was beginning to emerge in the in the north-east and that "significant job creation" would occur in the coming years.

Elsewhere in the north-east, construction work is set to begin on a £13 million five-storey university building in Darlington.
